The Wonders of Weird: Alternative Book Topics Can Help Interest Reluctant Readers
Halls, Kelly Milner
Knowledge Quest, v39 n4 p74-77 Mar-Apr 2011
By forcing gifted educators to teach in preparation for state testing and national assessments, the joy of discovery is becoming an endangered species, and learning is becoming a chore rather than an opportunity. Is it possible to strike a more reasonable balance? Kelly Gallagher suggests a 50/50 approach. Half of academic endeavor should be in direct response to state testing--preparation and high-level, analytical challenge. The other half should include a healthy dose of fun. In this article, the author stresses that she will continue to work hard to give educators strong, well-crafted, high-interest alternatives to more traditional educational nonfiction. She discusses how alternative book topics can help interest reluctant readers.
