Humphrey Tonkin's article (2011, this issue) refers to many relevant parameters in the current dominance of English in science. His conclusion that publication in English "is erroneously equated with scientific advancement in general" is a disturbingly valid generalization that ultimately reflects ignorance, prejudice, and myopia. Tonkin's portrayal of U.S. linguistic hubris contrasts markedly with the way universities in continental Europe see themselves. The author has only two minor quibbles with Tonkin's argument. He disputes the belief (popularized by Graddol and Jenkins) that "control of the English language is slipping out of the hands (or mouths) of its native speakers." Second, the idea that the profit making of monolinguals results from "conscious choices made by the linguistically advantaged" seems to ignore how hegemonic ideologies and habitus are internalized. They are part of the "normalization" process that Tonkin denounces, largely subconscious, and without the historical and structural origins of inequality being interrogated. (Contains 8 footnotes.)
