In her book title "Music, Informal Learning and the School," Lucy Green has ineluctably taken teachers to a place where potentially, students can really participate in an interactive pedagogy where student-centeredness is applied in its full sense. For this reason, the author found the potential contribution of the book to music education tremendous, in terms of research, analysis, and reflection on the research process and outcomes. Given the range of activities the research project acted upon, and the potential depth of implications for education, the author lifts out a few elements that she found particularly meaningful in terms of more general socio-cultural contexts. In this article, the author discusses these elements, namely (1) peer-directed learning; (2) enculturation; and (3) cultural values, in the context of functional musical worlds. She uses short vignettes to illustrate different perspectives. (Contains 13 notes.)
