A Life in Motion
Marquis, Margaret
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n39 pB28 Jun 2008
Since joining her city's first flat-track roller-derby league more than a year ago, the author relates that she discovered some surprising, interesting things about her university's tolerance for its employees' "second lives." To be taken seriously, the author relates that she offsets any possible concerns about her professional legitimacy by simply working harder. She also relates how she had been amused at the questions her colleagues and students ask when they begin to learn of her after-class activities as a roller girl. She also relates that in giving themselves permission to live outside the academic box, educators model that freedom to their students. When academics fearlessly cultivate unique and unusual interests and hobbies, they bring an unexpected element of diversity to the classroom.
