Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v73 n3 p51-52 Nov 2007
The author, a 64-year-old male college professor, shares the insight he learned when he took a Web-design workshop. The workshop, which was headed by a 50-ish woman, was terribly fast for the author. The author relates how he had felt depressed and frustrated at the insensitivity of the instructor. He realizes how his experience at the workshop was similar to what many low-income and working class students go through upon entering an academic setting for the first time: fast pace, falling behind, insensitive teachers, feelings of intimidation and stress, dropping out. As such, he makes it a point to remember the experiences he had during Web-design seminar whenever a student asks him to repeat something or complains about being overwhelmed by his class.
