On 28 November 2006 Russia observes the one-hundredth anniversary of Dmitrii Sergeevich Likhachev. By an edict of President V.V. Putin 2006 has been designated the year of D.S. Likhachev. A scientist of encyclopedic scope and a renowned researcher into Old Russian literature, Academician Likhachev became, starting in the second half of the 1980s, a symbol of the endeavors of this country's intelligentsia to make a better future for Russia. To serve as the platform from which to present his views to the scientific world and to the public at large he chose the St. Petersburg Trade Unions University of the Humanities (SPTUUH). In that institution he was able to realize his interests as a scholar and culturologist. In this article, the author describes how this happened and what the result was. The author singles out the aspects of the university's collaboration with D.S. Likhachev that may be of practical interest to the college and university community.
