On Promoting Rigour--A Response
Brown, Margaret
Journal of Education Policy, v22 n3 p353-356 May 2007
Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) usually uses three indicators in assessing research studies. These indicators are rigour, significance, and originality. In Ian Stronach's article, he claimed that RAE seemed to favor rigour over the other two rubrics. In this article, the author provides her arguments to Stronach's assumptions. The author explains that rigour may be a key hurdle for recognition in research but RAE does not give much recognition to research that is sloppily made, no matter how much rigour is given to such research. The author further explains that the three rubrics are different in type and assures everyone that RAE does not harbor paradigmatic bias in its rubrics.
