Presents and evaluates three possible futures of traditional universities in the face of the onslaught of budget-cutters and technophiles: (1) ultimate-digital-McLuhanism; (2) modest digital infusion; and (3) stalled revolution. It is concluded that--however refined and elegant the technological tools become--they must subordinate themselves to the ends for which the university was created. (PEN)
