Coherence Patterns in Alzheimer's Discourse.
Ellis, Donald G.
Communication Research, v23 n4 p472-95 Aug 1996
Reports on linguistic features and patterns of coherence in mild and advanced levels of discourse of Alzheimer's patients. Argues and demonstrates that, as the disease progresses, patients' discourse becomes "pregrammatical"--vocabulary-driven and reliant on meaning-based discourse features rather than grammatically based features. Discusses processing theories. Suggests four coherence requirements: grounding, temporal coherence, spatial coherence, and thematic coherence. (PA)
