Preparing English Language Learners for the Messy World of EIL: Interview with Aya Matsuda
Yeo, Marie
RELC Journal: A Journal of Language Teaching and Research, v49 n1 p119-124 Apr 2018
Aya Matsuda is Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department of English at Arizona State University, Tempe, USA. Her research interests include World Englishes (WE), the use of English as an international language (EIL), and the pedagogical implications of the global spread of English. She has published widely in various books and journals--"English Today," "JALT Journal," "TESOL Quarterly," "World Englishes"--as well as several encyclopedias. Professor Matsuda is one of the key World Englishes scholars who builds bridges between the World Englishes paradigm and ELT classroom practice. In order to showcase how to operationalize the paradigm of WE, she has published two edited books, "Principles and Practices of Teaching English as an International Language" (2012), and "Preparing Teachers to Teach English as an International Language" (2017), in which readers are given access to a wide collection of EIL/WE-informed classroom activities, lessons, and applied linguistics/teacher-education programmes in different parts of the world. Professor Matsuda served on the Board of Directors for the TESOL International Association from 2014 to 2017 and is a treasurer-secretary for the International Association for World Englishes. Some of the topics covered in the interview include: how Matsuda first got involved in the field of English as an International Language; why it is important to integrate EIL perspective in language teaching and language teacher education; common misconceptions teachers or scholars have about EIL; challenges language teachers might face in teaching EIL with a TEIL perspective; and the development of the field of EIL in the future.
