Ontario College of Teachers, Toronto.
This publication presents a response from the Ontario College of Teachers to the Canadian Minister of Education regarding the newly mandated teacher certification testing. It sets the stage for the provision of complete, accurate, and reliable advice, containing a summary of the extensive research conducted by the College and providing a wide range of options which emerge from the research. It acknowledges the value of consultation and invites input from members of the College, from education stakeholders, and from the public. It lays the foundation for the development of recommendations for consideration by the College Council as it formulates the advice that will be forwarded to the Minister. The paper consists of four main sections: (1) "Maintaining Competency: Survey of Programs and Practices of Ontario Self-Regulatory Bodies"; (2) "Ensuring Competency: Survey of International Programs and Practices in the Teaching Profession"; (3) "Demonstrating Competency in the Teaching Profession: The Ontario Context"; and (4) "Consultation: Addressing the Range of Options Emerging from the Research."
