What Works Clearinghouse Rating

Erk, Heinrich; Goetze, Lutz: Kaufmann, Gerhard – Zielsprache Deutsch, 1978
Examines validity of claims made for the Mannheim Rating (of teaching texts for German as a foreign language), as well as its criteria for judging textbooks. The nonexistence of a comprehensive grammar of contemporary German makes it difficult to discuss grammar; therefore, some ratings are seen as too harsh. (IFS/WGA)

Dick, John A. R. – Teaching English in the Two-Year College, 1985
Reviews over 50 textbooks grouped into three categories: (1) workbooks; (2) sentence style books, most of which use sentence combining as the fundamental type of exercise; and (3) copy books, which are used by directly copying passages with signals for particular changes. (EL)
