Indiana University's experiences with trying to cancel an increasingly expensive early retirement system illustrates some of the ways in which faculty retirement benefits are subject to attack and some of the potential and weaknesses of the traditional faculty governance mechanisms in trying to shape a response. Collective bargaining is discussed as a means of resolving the retrenchment issue in future faculty employment problems using the University of Montana as a case study. Areas examined include: retirement, tenure, turnover, rank distribution, resource and position reallocation and financial exigency. (LC)

Results of a survey of Utica College financial aid applicants revealed that the families of 67 percent have verified pension plans, with coverage varying by income level, type of employer, and occupation.
