The origins and evolution of women's studies are chronicled, focusing on both progress and resistance. A collaborative approach to graduate-level women's studies is recommended to ensure the further development of the field. A number of existing cooperative graduate programs are cited. (MSE)

Forces raising the cost of higher education will not disappear even in a stronger economy. Most research universities will be faced with balancing the scope of their individual commitments and the nature of their relationship with other institutions with advancement of knowledge and education at the highest levels.
