Academic Preparation for College, a document issued by the College Board and geared to telling students, parents, teachers, and administrators what high school students need to know and be able to do to succeed in college today, is described. Suggestions for trustees as shapers of policy are provided. (MLW)

Recommendations to higher education from a corporate executive include: the need for a commitment to excellence, competence in the English language, economics (the discipline that teaches there is no opportunity without its costs), history, humanities/technology balance, and the cultivation of the whole person. Changes to redress the inadequacies in American education are proposed: return to the ideal of genuinely liberal education for all, a nationwide system of standardized examination as the primary basis for educational promotion, and higher pay for teachers. (MLW)

Problems of collegiate athletics are identified: failure to prepare athletes for employment, underfinancing of women's sports, and inadequate athletic recreation for many students. A monitoring system on recruiting, financial aid, academic eligibility is suggested along with institutional cooperation to reduce the competitive pressure. (Author/MLW)
