This keynote address first briefly reviews the historical nature and structure of education in Zimbabwe prior to independence. Then, the theme of the seminar (integrated education as a preparation for social development), as well as related policy issues are stated. Changes in the education system of Zimbabwe since the 1940s, principally in the integration and provision of improved opportunities for African Americans, are reviewed. Political factors, integration efforts, teacher education, literacy education, and plans to develop higher education opportunities are noted. (MSE)
