The paper reports on a study of faculty work attitudes which was conducted to determine ways in which the work environment at the Hope School for Blind, Multi-Handicapped Children in Springfield, Illinois could be modified in ways that would lead to improved faculty morale. The study focused on two areas that are generally accepted as critical to maintaining high levels of morale among staff: the actual characteristics of the work environment at Hope School, and the attitudes of the faculty toward their work. Faculty attitudes were obtained by means of a personal interview, a work characteristics questionnaire, and an attitudinal questionnaire. It was speculated that the high attrition rate among teachers and support staff who work with severely disabled children both nationally and at Hope School was in part due to psychological demands which the children make on the faculty. Aspects covered in the report include procedures used in data collection, methodology, data analyses and interpretation, and recommendations for changes within Hope School. (DLS)
