A study sought to determine what relationships existed between speech rate, speech pitch variation, speech loudness, and the personality assessments made by listeners. The subjects, 214 undergraduate speech communication students, listened to one of eight tape recordings made by a male speaker to represent all the combinations of the three independent variables. The listeners' responses were recorded on questionnaires containing scales for judging the speaker's voice and a set of 16 personality traits. There were significant overall differences in personality judgments attributable to the three independent variables. These main effects varied along two separate dimensions of personality (potency and amiability). The impact of the three variables conformed to patterns that were not the same for both dimensions. These results indicated that when listeners offered their judgments of the personality of an unknown male speaker based only on the speaker's voice, their perceptions of three features of the voice were significantly related to such personality judgments.
