The study was undertaken to investigate the post high school status of 76 mildly retarded graduates (1974-78) of the work/study programs of the eastern and central zones of the Heartland Area Education Agency. Interviews of the Ss yielded data which were analyzed in four main categories: social adjustment, community resources, vocational adjustment, and economic adjustment. Among findings were that 18% of the graduates were married (none were divorced), 63% were living with parents, and over 87% had not taken any academic consumer education or apprentice training following completion of high school. Ss' ratings of level of preparation for employment indicated that most Ss felt the program was either greatly helpful or somewhat helpful in all areas surveyed. Three fourths of the graduates found work through their work/study teacher, and 69% of the graduates were currently employed. The largest percentage of males were paying most of their living expenses, and the largest percentage of females were paying none of their expenses. Among eight recommendations was that more cooperation among parents, schools, and community agencies is needed to develop activities leading to student knowledge and practice of acceptable social skills.
