Funding, Political and Methodological Challenges in Researching the Experiences of Black Students. Sage Research Methods: Diversifying and Decolonizing Research
Nick Cartwright
Sage Research Methods Cases
The higher education sector has been slow to respond to charges of institutional racism, which is reflected in what research is regarded as valid and what is funded. Further, many areas of student provision fall outside of the direct control of higher education institutions, for example, accommodation which may be operated by private landlords. This has meant that the Black student voice has been absent from a lot of research. As a result no previous study had looked specifically at the experiences of Black students in UK student accommodation. To better understand these experiences, the Halpin Partnership established a Black-led research team, I served as an external reviewer for the team, and together we designed a mixed-methods approach. We used a survey to gauge key issues to explore in focus groups, but had a very low response rate from certain ethnic groups, including Black students. We then employed a market research company, which also had very low representation. We also struggled to recruit Black participants to focus groups. After we had collected the data, evaluation was also problematic. Defining who was included in the category 'Black' was contentious, and we encountered epistemological problems with certain ways of knowing not being respected as robust--such as oral traditions, narrative methodologies, and lived experiences. We did publish a report, capturing and amplifying Black stories through thematic narrative analysis, which has impacted the behaviors of providers of student accommodation.
