Capturing Classroom Learning: Using Multiple Methods in a Contemporary Classroom. Sage Research Methods Cases Part 2
Owen Barden
Sage Research Methods Cases
This case study describes how I used multiple methods to investigate learning in a classroom where I was also the teacher. Any classroom contains a lot of interconnected activity, and a lot of learning these days is mediated through computers and other digital devices. I explain how and why I used multiple methods to develop a vivid, rich, and nuanced understanding of the "connected complexities" going on in my classroom. Some of the methods I used are staples of qualitative research: interviews and participant observation. Others are used less frequently, and it is these I focus on here: video recordings, dynamic screen capture, and protocol analysis. I explain both the challenges and advantages of such an approach; balanced against the need to analyze large amounts of varied data is the opportunity to achieve an understanding drawn from several perspectives on a given set of events.
