Yelling, Threatening, and Putting Down: What To Do Instead. [Videotape].
Arnow, Michael
Intended for parents of children ages 2 to 10 years, this videotape offers parents alternative strategies to yelling, threatening, and putting down for dealing with children's challenging behaviors. The 35-minute video features scenarios of four common, challenging behaviors: (1) when children are very active; (2) when they get angry; (3) when they whine; and (4) when they fight with siblings. Following each scene is a opportunity for the viewer or workshop leader to pause the program and discuss alternatives to the parent's response in the video. A variety of positive, practical parenting techniques are then presented to address the behavior at hand. The program emphasizes prevention: understanding children, keeping age appropriate expectations, thinking before doing, emphasizing "do's" before "don'ts" and establishing clear family rules in advance. A discussion guide accompanies the video, which includes questions to consider for each scenario, helpful information pertaining to the behavior in the scenario, and specific parenting techniques suggested in the video.
