Rhythmic Training for Dancers.
Kaplan, Robert
This kit, which includes a workbook and a companion CD-ROM, is designed to help dancers develop a better understanding of musical time and phrasing, two concepts that directly correspond with dancers' activities. These materials provide an interdisciplinary approach that bridges the perceptual barrier between dancers and musicians by explaining concepts from both perspectives. The class activities, exercises, and worksheets are structured within six categories of study: aural skills, rhythm activities, vocal training, notation, dance technique and pedagogy, and choreography. The workbook's 10 chapters are: (1) "Musical Time: Beat"; (2) "Phrasing"; (3) "Organization of Musical Time"; (4) "Time Signatures"; (5) "Extending Time and Further Rhythmic Manipulation; (6) "Compound Time"; (7) "Triple Meters"; (8) "Polyrhythm and Polymeter"; (9) "Natural Sound; and (10) "Body Percussion." Worksheets, checklists, and assessments are appended. The CD-ROM, "An Interactive Guide to Music for Dancers," presents video samples of dance combinations from technique classes, explores rhythm and meter through audio and video samples, and offers three interactive environments for practice.
