Cultivating Roots: Home/School Partnerships. [Videotape].
National Association for the Education of Young Children, Washington, DC.
Noting the need for early childhood programs to work as a team with parents and community members to benefit the children and families they serve, this videotape examines ways to foster partnerships between families and schools. The first part of the 22-minute video features conversations with educators and administrators of early childhood programs as they describe the benefits of parent-school partnerships to parents, children, and their teachers. The remainder of the video illustrates how two programs implemented successful home-school partnerships. The first program entailed family involvement in the early childhood program at many levels, including parent education and using a parent lending library; the video notes the importance of teamwork and that goals for family involvement need to be known by all members of the team. The second program involved the use of a project for kindergarten and first graders in an urban neighborhood school in which students visited each other's homes during the day and wrote about their experiences. The video highlights benefits of this project, including enhanced student language/writing skills, an improved sense of community within the classroom, and strengthened communication between home and school.
