This videotape, featuring Greek artist and preschool education lecturer, Eli Trimis, illustrates an active learning approach to paper construction for preschool and kindergarten children, showing how early childhood teachers can support young artists' activities. The five parts of the video cover: a rationale for working with paper; using paper as a surface for drawing, painting, and collage; exploring and exploiting the three-dimensional qualities of paper; creating with crepe paper; and ways to support young artists. This last part of the video illustrates the following support strategies: (1) provide children with a wide variety of paper; (2) present paper experiences in sequences that begin with exploration and move from simple materials and actions to more complex and demanding ones; (3) offer choices and challenges to children that encourage them to explore and work with the possibilities of each paper type; (4) converse with children about the visual-graphic elements, repetition, patterns, and use of space seen in their work; (5) plan outdoor paper experiences; (6) take children to visit places where paper is made, used, or displayed, and exhibit the children's work with paper; and (7) support children's creativity as it arises in response to various paper types, and value their unique solutions to the problems presented by working with paper.
