The Choice of a Lifetime: Education before Motherhood. [Videotape].
Bureau for At-Risk Youth, Plainview, NY.; Psychological Perspectives Ltd., New York, NY.
Targeted to teens at-risk for early motherhood and dropping out of school, as well as to teachers, counselors, and parents, this video encourages teens to delay motherhood by underscoring the link between goal-setting and education. The 24-minute film features seven urban high school students speaking about the importance of education and the limitation of choices resulting from teen motherhood. The profiles provide understanding of how teenage girls think and feel about teen motherhood; demonstrate why some girls think that a baby might bring love, comfort, and closeness into their lives when they feel lonely and unsupported; encourage girls to define and pursue goals and to delay motherhood; stress that education is the key to achieving goals and independence; and show that teens can draw support from teachers and friends, as well as family.
