Manitoba Health Education Assessment 1991. Final Report: French Immersion Program = Evaluation en hygiene Manitoba 1991. Rapport final: programme d'immersion francaise.
Manitoba Dept. of Education and Training, Winnipeg. Curriculum Services Branch.
The 1991 Manitoba Health Education Assessment consisted of the grade-4 health education test, a survey of grade-4 teachers, and the comparison of student performance in grades 5 and 10 from 1982 to 1991. The grade-4 sample consisted of 10% of students from English language schools, all students in Franco-Manitoban schools, and 25% of all students in French immersion programs (377 students). For grades 5 and 10, the sample included 10% of all students at both grade levels in all programs. This report contains results from the French immersion schools. The overall grade-4 results indicate that the curriculum was well covered. Students seem to have learned well, particularly in "hands-on" areas, and teachers appear to have been adequately trained. The comparison of grade-5 current results with those from 1982 showed a high degree of similarity, but the mean scores for grade-10 were generally lower in 1991. Specific recommendations are given for the different grade levels. Appendixes contain the teacher survey, a list of members of the advisory committee, and a description of major steps in the assessment. Ten tables and two figures present findings. (SLD)
