Kramer, Gene A.; DeMarais, David R. – Journal of Dental Education, 1992
Norm-referenced and criterion-referenced approaches were used to set a minimum passing score for Part II of the pilot National Board Dental Examination. Standards and associated failure rates were found similar for both approaches. This and the advantages of the former approach suggest it is an appropriate method. (Author/MSE)

Saliu, Sokol – Journal of Science Education and Technology, 2005
Student learning is a complex incremental cognitive process; assessment needs to parallel this, reporting the results in similar terms. Application of fuzzy sets and logic to the criterion-referenced assessment of student learning is considered here. The constrained qualitative assessment (CQA) system was designed, and then applied in assessing a…

Clariana, Roy B.; Koul, Ravinder; Salehi, Roya – International Journal of Instructional Media, 2006
This investigation seeks to confirm a computer-based approach that can be used to score concept maps (Poindexter & Clariana, 2004) and then describes the concurrent criterion-related validity of these scores. Participants enrolled in two graduate courses (n=24) were asked to read about and research online the structure and function of the heart…

Engec, Necati – Journal of Educational Research, 2006
The authors investigated the relationship between student mobility and student performance and behavior. The authors used criterion-referenced test (CRT) and norm-referenced test (NRT) data indexes from the 1998-1999 school year. Results showed that as the mobility of students increased within the school year, their test performance on the CRT and…

Byrd-Bredbenner, Carol; Wheatley, Virginia; Schaffner, Donald; Bruhn, Christine; Blalock, Lydia; Maurer, Jaclyn – Journal of Food Science Education, 2007
Little is known about the food safety knowledge of young adults. In addition, few knowledge questionnaires and no comprehensive, criterion-referenced measure that assesses the full range of food safety knowledge could be identified. Without appropriate, valid, and reliable measures and baseline data, it is difficult to develop and implement…

De Leonibus, Nancy; Thomson, Scott – 1977
After examining some of the pros and cons of traditional grading, the demands colleges make on grading practices, and the responses of people interested in grading, a number of examples of operating alternative systems are given. The alternatives include a dual (pass/withdraw grading in some courses, traditional grading in others) system, a…

Richardson, Kim – Reading Teacher, 1987
Examines the Decoding Skills Test (DST), a criterion referenced, diagnostic instrument designed to identify deficiencies in word decoding. (JC)
Descriptors: Context Clues, Criterion Referenced Tests, Decoding (Reading), Diagnostic Tests

Haertel, Edward – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 1987
This paper describes conventions in the scoring of classroom tests and of the achievement batteries used in school districts', testing programs in the U.S. The scales used for the Scholastic Aptitude Test and the American College Testing Program are described. Some new, criterion-referenced scales developed for state and national assessments are…

Findlay, Jan – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1987
Looks at school-based assessment within a norm-referenced framework which replaced external examinations for all year levels of high school in Queensland (Australia) beginning in 1973. Suggests that changes have made little advance, have used an enormous amount of resources, but have acted as an impetus to examine assessment and curriculum. (PK)

Grosse, Martin E.; Wright, Benjamin D. – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1986
Based on the standard setting procedures or the American Board of Preventive Medicine for their Core Test, this article describes how Rasch measurement can facilitate using test content judgments in setting a standard. Rasch measurement can then be used to evaluate and improve the precision of the standard and to hold it constant across time.…

Hamaker, Christiaan – Review of Educational Research, 1986
The research literature on the effects of factual and higher order adjunct questions is reviewed. The influence of 13 design variables on the direction and size of adjunct-questions effects is investigated. It is indicated that higher order adjunct questions may have a more general facilitative effect. (Author/JAZ)

Davies, Alan – Journal of Applied Linguistics, 1985
Describes three "continuum categories" of language tests and the place of communicative tests in each of the three continuums. The question of what communication involves is discussed and five different approaches to communicative language testing are presented. (SED)

Joseph, John H.; Dwyer, Francis M. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1984
To investigate the effectiveness of integrating abstract and realistic visualization, the effectiveness of four treatments was measured for: (1) facilitating student achievement of different kinds of educational objectives; (2) students possessing different levels of student ability; (3) externally paced and self-paced methods of instruction; and…

Mitchell, Alison C. – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1982
Describes a Scottish project--"School-based assessment using item banking"--investigating the feasibility of producing computer-based test marking and reporting facilities. Teachers would construct their own tests from item banks and carry out diagnostic assessment and criterion-referenced measurement to evaluate students with SCRIBE, a…

Powell, T. Hennessy – Tennessee Education, 1981
The major advantage of criterion referenced tests (CRTs) over norm referenced tests (NRTs) is that CRTs yield specific information about student skills upon which educators can plan individualized instruction. Individual education with a strong emphasis on teaching students specific skills will be enhanced by the committed use of CRTs. (Author)
