Young, Robert J. – School Library Media Quarterly, 1990
Discusses developments in artificial intelligence in terms of their impact on school library media centers and the role of media specialists. Possible uses of expert systems, hypertext, and CD-ROM technologies in school media centers are examined and the challenges presented by these technologies are discussed. Fourteen sources of additional…

Button, Charles G. – Instructional Science, 1989
Discusses the use of intelligent tutoring systems for computer-assisted language learning (CALL), emphasizing second language learning. Schank's conceptual dependency theory is described, a prototype of a program for second language instruction for 7- to 15-year-olds is explained, and future developments are discussed. Perkins, Kyle; And Others – Language Testing, 1995
This article reports the results of using a three-layer back propagation artificial neural network to predict item difficulty in a reading comprehension test. Three classes of variables were examined: text structure, propositional analysis, and cognitive demand. Results demonstrate that the networks can consistently predict item difficulty. (JL)

Horton, Forest Woody, Jr. – International Forum on Information and Documentation, 1995
Explores some speculative hypotheses on states of knowing and learning, and how these states and processes might be applied to artificial intelligence and expert systems development. (JKP)
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Structures
Marinov, Milko; Zhelyaskova, Irina – Interactive Learning International, 1992
Considers the possibility of designing CAI (computer-assisted instruction) systems that are managed by semantic networks. Topics discussed include general descriptions of the suggested approach, lesson-presentation modes, and the architecture of a CAI system managed by a semantic network. (10 references) (MES)

Hmelo, Cindy E.; Holton, Douglas L.; Kolodner, Janet L. – Journal of the Learning Sciences, 2000
Indicates the presence of complex structural, behavioral, and functional relations to understanding. Reports on a design experiment in which 6th grade children learned about the human respiratory system by designing artificial lungs and building partial working models. Makes suggestions for successful learning from design activities. (Contains 44…

Chernyi, A. I. – International Forum on Information and Documentation, 1997
Discusses knowledge, organization, and the organization and representation of knowledge. Addresses the relevance of international auxiliary languages as problems of development and use of special sign systems. Argues that--for computer realization of intellectual processes by modeling, not imitation--the psychological mechanisms of human memory…

DeKanter, Nick – TechTrends: Linking Research & Practice to Improve Learning, 2005
The new definition of interactivity has as its focal point the skills of people, not the capabilities of the technology. The goal is to enhance the interaction between people and the learning that can only occur among curious and motivated individuals working together. The social nature of people, the increasing capabilities of technology and the…
