Zepp, R.; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1987
A test of logic using implicational and disjunctive sentences was given to Chinese and English speakers. No differences were found on "if-then" sentences, but differences were found on "or" sentences. (MNS)
Descriptors: Bilingual Students, College Students, Cross Cultural Studies, Educational Research

Templeton, Shane; Scarborough-Franks, Linda – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1985
Reports a study that examined sixth- and 10th-grade students' ability to generate orthographic and phonetic derivatives for three predominant vowel-alternation patterns characteristic of internal derivational morphology. Results support the hypothesis that a productive knowledge of these patterns in orthography precedes a productive knowledge of…
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Error Patterns, Grade 10, Grade 6

Temple, Christine M. – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1985
Reports a study that compared the spelling performance of a 17-year-old developmental dysgraphic of normal intelligence to that of an acquired dysgraphic. Findings indicate that both make phonologically valid errors and spell regular words better than irregular words. These performances reflect a phonological routine corresponding to that used by…
Descriptors: Adolescents, Case Studies, Comparative Analysis, Dysgraphia

Lord, Frederic M. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1986
Advantages and disadvantages of joint maximum likelihood, marginal maximum likelihood, and Bayesian methods of parameter estimation in item response theory are discussed and compared. (Author)
Descriptors: Bayesian Statistics, Error Patterns, Estimation (Mathematics), Higher Education

Webb, Noreen M.; And Others – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1986
The consistency of student response patterns on a test of language arts was examined in a set of studies as a first step toward designing a computer adaptive test to diagnose errors. (Author/LMO)
Descriptors: Adaptive Testing, Computer Assisted Testing, Diagnostic Tests, Error Patterns

Anderson, Kristine F. – Reading Teacher, 1985
Argues that learning to spell is a developmental process and reviews research showing that errors made by poor spellers can indicate the point at which that development has broken down. Discusses some of the linguistic strategies students must acquire to become proficient spellers and offers teaching suggestions for helping students develop a…
Descriptors: Child Language, Cognitive Processes, Developmental Stages, Educational Research

Bisanz, Gay L.; And Others – Child Development, 1984
Focuses on differences occurring with age and reading skill in the use of phonemic codes in short-term retention tasks where stimuli were presented visually. Subjects were groups of average readers in grades two, four, and six; superior readers in grade four; and disabled readers in grades four and six from three public schools. (Author/RH)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cognitive Processes, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students

Nesher, Pearla; Peled, Irit – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1986
The process of transition from a novice's state to that of an expert, in the domain of decimals, is described in terms of explicit, intermediate, and transitional rules which are consistent yet erroneous. Data from students in grades 6-9 are included. (MNS)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Decimal Fractions, Educational Research, Elementary School Mathematics

Tatsuoka, Kikumi K. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1983
A newly introduced approach, rule space, can represent large numbers of erroneous rules of arithmetic operations quantitatively and can predict the likelihood of each erroneous rule. The new model challenges the credibility of the traditional right-or-wrong scoring procedure. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Addition, Algorithms, Arithmetic, Diagnostic Tests
Feve, Guy – Francais dans le Monde, 1984
An approach to teaching grammar that combines an understanding of the error patterns of nonnative speakers and a theoretical model that describes that language is better suited than most to the actual audience of that instruction. (MSE)
Descriptors: Classroom Techniques, Educational Strategies, Error Patterns, Foreign Countries

Cronnell, Bruce – Journal of Educational Research, 1985
An analysis of errors found in writing samples by elementary school Mexican-Americans is presented. This study focused on errors that may be caused by speech patterns and language usage. Results are discussed. (Author/DF)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, English (Second Language), Error Patterns, Grade 3

Ruddock, Graham; And Others – Mathematics in School, 1984
Results obtained from 11- and 15-year-olds on tests of understanding of decimal place value and its influence on addition and subtraction skills are reported and discussed. (MNS)
Descriptors: Addition, Decimal Fractions, Educational Research, Elementary Secondary Education

Jenkins, Joseph R.; And Others – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1983
Two procedures for correcting oral reading errors, word supply and word drill, were examined to determine their effects on measures of word recognition and comprehension with 17 learning disabled elementary school students. (Author/SW)
Descriptors: Drills (Practice), Elementary Education, Error Patterns, Feedback

Chromiak, Walter; Weisberg, Robert W. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1981
Adults' ability to track a moving target was examined in two experiments in order to compare their performance with that of very young infants. Results indicated that (1) adults'"overshoot" errors resembled those reported for young infants; and (2) adults had problems tracking a moving target which unexpectedly changed direction. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Adults, Comparative Analysis, Difficulty Level, Error Patterns

And Others; Roll, Steve – Multiple Linear Regression Viewpoints, 1979
A Type VI error results from inconsistency between the researchers' question of interest and the statistical procedures employed to analyze the data. An example of a research problem is analyzed to show the increase in statistical power resulting from improved research design, using multiple regression instead of analysis of variance. (CTM)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Error Patterns, Higher Education, Hypothesis Testing
