Hofmann, Richard J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
The Guttman scale is discussed from the viewpoint of errors in response patterns. The errors are assumed to be distributed as a binomial. A double-barreled significance test is suggested having two probabilities: high probability and low probability. (Author)

Gershkoff-Stowe, Lisa; Smith, Linda B. – Cognitive Psychology, 1997
Errors in naming pictures were studied for 12 children followed from age 15 months to 22 months and for 60 children of similar ages at three different levels of vocabulary development. An increase in naming errors was found with sudden increases in productive vocabulary, suggesting interference from previously retrieved words. (SLD)

Courtade, Ida – Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German, 1996
The defining of colors is a very subjective topic and results in many misunderstandings, especially in translation from one language to another. The number and significance of color adjectives vary from culture to culture. The goal of this article is to explain the origins of such variations and to discuss examples of common translation errors and…

Bley-Vroman, Robert; Chaudron, Craig – Language Learning, 1990
Discusses the theory that the second-language processing of subordinate clauses and of anaphora is affected by the basic word order of a learners native language. This phenomenon, believed to be a prediction of universal grammar, is explored. (54 references) (Author/VWL)

Barr, Helen M.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1990
Multiple regression analyses of data from 449 children indicated statistically significant relationships between moderate levels of prenatal alcohol exposure and increased errors, increased latency, and increased total time on the Wisconsin Fine Motor Steadiness Battery and poorer balance on the Gross Motor Scale. Hendrickson, Jo M.; And Others – Education and Treatment of Children, 1988
The article presents a six-step procedure for analyzing spelling errors, selecting instructional tactics, and setting performance standards for correcting persistent spelling errors. (DB)

Abraham, Suzanne – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1989
A phonological framework was used to describe the speech errors of 13 orally trained hearing-impaired children, ages 6 to 16. Among findings were that initial consonant inventories were larger than final consonant inventories and that production accuracy was significantly related to size of consonant inventories. (Author/DB)

Bialystok, Ellen – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1989
Three studies examined the hypotheses that: (1) codability and not extent of distance determines difficulty; (2) critical features and not whole objects are coded; and (3) implicit perceptual axes provide a frame of reference for coding the display. Results supporting these hypotheses are discussed in terms of a description of spatial…

Harley, Trevor A.; And Others – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1995
This article explores a model of lexicalisation based upon the constraints that lexicalisation is an interactive process and that it takes place in two stages. The article examines in depth the time-course of normal lexicalisation, speech error data, and the cognitive neuropsychology of speech production. (16 references) (CK)

Norris, Dennis; And Others – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1995
Presents the first stage in a research effort developing a detailed computational model of working memory. The central feature of the model is counterintuitive. It is assumed that there is a primacy gradient of activation across successive list items. A second stage of the model is influenced by the combined effects of the primacy gradient and…

Higgins, E. Tory; Liberman, Akiva – Cognitive Psychology, 1994
Two studies involving 195 undergraduates investigated memory errors occurring when the context standard used in judging target behaviors differs from the category norm standard available when behaviors are recalled. Results support a "natural" tendency to use the current categorical meaning of a judgment to reconstruct the referent of…

Campbell, Jamie I. D. – Cognition, 1994
Sixty-four adults were tested on simple addition and multiplication problems presented in Arabic digit or English number-word format. Overall, response times and error rates were much higher with the word format, but more important, presentation format interacted with arithmetic operation and problem size. (DR)

Thomas, Margaret; And Others – Technical Communication, 1992
Investigates how accurately writers detect violations of the writing rules of Simplified English (SE) and what sorts of mistakes are likely to be made when text is rewritten to conform to SE rules. Concludes that training tools such as the Simplified English Analyser can lessen the writers' difficulties. (SR)

Horner, Bruce – Rhetoric Review, 1992
Asserts that distinction between "error" and its social implications is false and that research and teaching based on that distinction is flawed. Considers how errors might be viewed as social in their production and correction, examines two ways in which this is elided in the literature, and explores how a social view of error might inform…
