Wittig, Michele Andrisin; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Investigated women's (N=35) aptitude for and changes in skills during an engineering training program and the relationship between academic/demographic information and cognitive skills to success in the program. Compares results with those of studies of male undergraduates. Includes results of mathematics anxiety and conservation of horizontality…

Braun, Henry I.; And Others – Psychometrika, 1983
Empirical Bayes methods are shown to provide a practical alternative to standard least squares methods in fitting high dimensional models to sparse data. An example concerning prediction bias in educational testing is presented as an illustration. (Author)

Oakland, Thomas – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1983
Examined the relationships of reading and math achievement with intelligence and adaptive behavior in Anglo, Black, and Mexican American children (N=345). The variance accounted for by the full model (race, sex, age, and socioeconomic status) was significant for reading and math. Variance associated with race and socioeconomic status was…

Hong, Sung-Mook – Australian Journal of Adult Education, 1982
In recent years a dramatic increase in enrollments of mature age students has occurred in courses of arts, social sciences, and humanities. The main objective of this study was to examine the predictive value of the age factor in the academic performance of behavioral science students at a regional college of advanced education in Australia. Gallerani, David; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1982
Examined construction of different predictive models for readiness for first grade, using data from prekindergarten screening. Found 45.6 percent to 75.9 percent of the children correctly classified. Results indicate that less emphasis should be given to collecting historical screening data and that many social/emotional problems may go undetected…

Nichta, Lawrence J., Jr.; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1982
Evaluated the Screening Test of Academic Readiness (STAR) using a sample of 28 third graders. The third graders' scores on the Peabody Individual Achievement Test were correlated with their total STAR scores from prekindergarten testing. Results showed the STAR is a useful instrument for predicting third grade achievement. (Author/JAC)

Bond, Lloyd – New Directions for Testing and Measurement, 1981
While some forms of test bias (for example, bias in selection and prediction) appear amenable to definitional consensus, a definition of cultural bias will remain problematic so long as it is confused with the nature/nurture issue. (Author/BW)

Blake, Robert R.; Mouton, Jane S. – Group and Organization Studies, 1981
Attempts to resolve the leadership theory controversy between situationalism and the one-best-way approach. Indicates the validity of the latter and the lack of predictive value of the former. Results indicated administrators chose the 9,9 alternative and rejected situationally prescribed answers, reflecting a management by principles (behavioral…

Kaplan, Robert M. – American Psychologist, 1982
Evidence suggests that the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), in combination with high school grades, is a good predictor of college success for students from different ethnic groups and income levels. Although legislation stemming from the Nader investigation of the Educational Testing Service purports to protect consumers, it may actually work…

Harrison, Patti L.; Naglieri, Jack A. – Psychology in the Schools, 1981
Scores on Kaufman's (1977) McCarthy short form and the McCarthy Screening Test (1978) were obtained for first graders (N=53). As follow-up nine months later, the Metropolitan Achievement Test was administered. Results showed Kaufman's short form scores usually indicated a smaller number of false negatives than did McCarthy Screening Test scores.…

Bailey, Donald B., Jr. – Psychology in the Schools, 1981
Tested four repeated measures approaches to assessment for their relationship to intelligence test scores, teacher ratings, and two criterion-referenced measures. Tested (N=114) kindergarteners. Results showed last-day scores generally improved predictability over first-day scores, but this improvement was not statistically significant.…

Nienhuis, L. J. A.; van Weeren, J. – Etudes de Linguistique Appliquee, 1979
Discusses predictive and conceptual validity, reports on two experiments on each type of test validity with relation to language tests, and indicates some problems posed by these two forms of evaluation. (AM)

Glazzard, Peggy H. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1980
The study evaluated two kindergarten predictive instruments, the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests: Readiness Skills and the Teacher Estimate of Kindergarten Pupils' Abilities, by following the same 107 kindergartners over 1, 2, 3, and 4 years using multiple regression analysis. (Author/SBH)

Janes, Cynthia L.; And Others – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1979
Teachers' ratings, especially the peer relations measure, far surpassed other data sources in predicting general adult mental status. Mothers and sons closely agree on sons' adult behavior. One teacher-rated item, "fails to get along with other children," was closely associated with adult behaviors. (Author/CP)

Reynolds, Cecil R. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1980
When a number of school readiness tests were used with a group of 322 kindergarten children to predict end of first-grade Metropolitan Achievement Test scores, no evidence of racial bias and only minimal effects of sex bias were found in the predictions based on analysis of variance. (CTM)
