Crofoot, M.J.; Bennett, T.S. – Psychology in the Schools, 1980
Slosson Intelligence Test scores are the best predictor of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (Revised) (WISC-R) IQ scores. But they are often higher than WISC-R scores and increasingly verbally weighted. A skilled teacher's classroom observation is as valid an indicator of need for in-depth assessment as screening tests. (JAC)
Descriptors: Cognitive Measurement, Comparative Testing, Diagnostic Tests, Educational Diagnosis

Stewart, Abigail J. – Psychology of Women Quarterly, 1980
Marriage, achievement need, children and self-definition predicted negative career persistence and career activity patterns in some family situations. Self-definition was associated with professional career activity among unconstrained women, but with freelance activity among married mothers. Personality variables may predict behavior within broad…

Plake, Barbara S.; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1980
Results of the Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematics Concepts subtests of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills were analyzed for sex bias. On the whole, little evidence for sex bias was found for the four subtests and three grade levels examined. (Author)
Descriptors: Bias, Comparative Analysis, Elementary School Students, Junior High School Students

Michael, William B.; Shaffer, Phyllis – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
The Test of Standard Written English was found to be nearly as valid as the California State University and Colleges English Placement Test, while requiring one-fifth of the time. Both tests were more valid than the Scholastic Aptitude Test-Verbal in predicting English composition grades. (JKS)
Descriptors: College Entrance Examinations, College Students, Grade Point Average, Higher Education

Reschly, Daniel J.; Sabers, Darrell L. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1979
Test bias, assumed as equal regression lines between two different tests for different populations was investigated to predict Metropolitan Achievement Tests from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children--Revised. Subjects were 1,040 children in grades 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9: Anglo American, Black, Mexican American, and Native American Papago. (JKS)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Elementary Education, Intelligence Tests, Minority Group Children

Collins, Cathy – Reading Improvement, 1979
Reports on a study that examined the predictive power of five specific prereading skills tests for first-grade reading achievement and assessed their value as indicators of reading readiness. (FL)
Descriptors: Beginning Reading, Criterion Referenced Tests, Grade 1, Predictive Validity

McDonald, Rita T.; Gawkoski, Roman S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
Records of students in an honors program at Marquette University revealed that the College Board Scholastic Aptitude Test verbal and mathematics scores were moderately predictive for all honors students. Only the mathematics score was predictive of program success for women. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, College Entrance Examinations, Grade Point Average, Grade Prediction

Lessard-Clouston, Michael – Canadian Modern Language Review, 1996
Building on the prior work of Sanaoui (1995), this article reports on the results of administering a self-report questionnaire to students of English as a Second Language to discover the vocabulary learning activities that learners engaged in outside class. Discusses why a structured learning approach did not predict either greater vocabulary…

Chambers, Mary E.; Sugden, David A. – International Journal of Early Years Education, 2002
Tested the reliability and validity of a teacher-completed checklist to identify movement difficulties in a sample of 3- to 5-year-olds. Analysis showed that the checklist identified movement difficulties and found significant differences between children who displayed movement difficulties and those who did not. Interrater reliability and…

Gresham, Frank M.; And Others – Behavioral Disorders, 1996
This study compared 136 second, third, and fourth graders considered to be at high, moderate, and low risk of behavior disorders on several variables. The Critical Events Index was used; primary differences among the groups were on indicators of social competence and externalizing behaviors. (CR)
Descriptors: At Risk Persons, Behavior Disorders, Behavior Patterns, Elementary Education

McGrew, Kevin S.; Knopik, Susan N. – Journal of School Psychology, 1996
Calculated intra-cognitive strengths and weaknesses of children in grades 1 through 12, using two common criteria for defining exceptionality. Found that an individual's total number of significant intra-cognitive strengths and/or weaknesses has little diagnostic significance as pertains to low- or under-achievement in reading, mathematics, or…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Adolescents, Children, Cognitive Tests

Hoffman, Jeffrey D.; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1996
Compares the predictive and concurrent validities of a learning efficiency test with that of another test. Memory factor scores of the learning efficiency test correlated significantly with the other test's scores, with class grades, and with actual grade-level functioning in reading. The learning efficiency test's validity compares favorably to…
Descriptors: Children, Comparative Testing, Concurrent Validity, Elementary Education

Hecht, Steven A.; Greenfield, Daryl B. – School Psychology Review, 2001
Compares the relative utility of teacher ratings versus several kinds of reading-related tests measured in the first grade in predicting third grade levels of reading skills in a sample of predominantly ethnic minority children exposed to poverty. Analyses indicated that, in general, teacher ratings predicted later individual differences in…

Wetherby, Amy M.; Goldstein, Howard; Cleary, Julie; Allen, Lori; Kublin, Kary – Infants and Young Children, 2003
This article describes two studies that examined the concurrent and predictive validity of the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales Developmental Profile (CSBS DP), a measure for identifying children less than 24 months old who are at risk for communication disorders. Findings support the use of prelinguistic predictors and the important…

Holmes, Alice E.; And Others – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1989
Use of acoustic reflectometry was compared with tympanometry in middle ear screenings for 357 children, aged 5 months to 19 years. Results were analyzed according to sex, age, and sensorineural hearing status. Intratest reliability was highly significant and positive predictive accuracy and specificity rates were excellent, but sensitivity rates…
