McDougall, Patricia; Borowsky, Ron; MacKinnon, G. E.; Hymel, Shelley – Brain and Language, 2005
Recent research on developmental dyslexia has suggested a phonological core deficit hypothesis (e.g., Manis, Seidenberg, Doi, McBride-Chang, & Peterson, 1996; Stanovich, Siegel, & Gottardo, 1997) whereby pure cases of developmental phonological dyslexia (dysfunctional phonetic decoding processing but normal sight vocabulary processing) can exist,…

Fossett, Brenda; Mirenda, Pat – Research in Developmental Disabilities: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2006
Numerous instructional techniques have been used to teach sight word reading skills to individuals with developmental disabilities. The results of research incorporating paired associate instruction, in which familiar pictures are paired with unknown print stimuli, suggest that pictures ''block'' (i.e., interfere with) learners' ability to…

Baumgart, Diane; VanWalleghem, John – Education and Training in Mental Retardation, 1987
The study compared computer assisted instruction with a speech synthesizer and teacher instruction to teach grocery sight words to three moderately retarded adults in an alternating treatments design. Two of the subjects learned equally well with either method while one learned only in the teacher-taught situation. (Author/DB)

McGee, Gail G.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1986
Two autistic children (5 and 13 years old) acquired functional sight-word reading skills in a play activity. Ss gained access to preferred toys by selecting toy labels in tasks requiring increasingly complex visual discriminations. Ss showed comprehension on probes requiring reading skills to locate toys stored in labeled boxes. (Author/CL)

Worsdell, April S.; Iwata, Brian A.; Dozier, Claudia L.; Johnson, Adrienne D.; Neidert, Pamela L.; Thomason, Jessica L. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2005
A great deal is known about the effects of positive reinforcement on response acquisition; by contrast, much less research has been conducted on contingencies applied to errors. We examined the effects of response repetition as an error-correction procedure on the sight-word reading performance of 11 adults with developmental disabilities. Study 1…

Kourea, Lefki; Cartledge, Gwendolyn; Musti-Rao, Shobana – Remedial and Special Education, 2007
This study reports the results of a peer-mediated intervention, total class peer tutoring, on the academic performance of six urban students at risk for reading failure. A multiple baseline design across subjects was used to evaluate the effects of this intervention. The results showed that five of the six students significantly increased their…

Browder, Diane M.; And Others – Education and Training of the Mentally Retarded, 1984
To maximize effectiveness of instruction in daily living skills, teachers need procedures that are applicable to small group instruction, that promote generalization, and that can be replicated across skills. Eight moderately mentally retarded adults acquired and generalized daily living skills through a combination of instructions in reading…

Bryant, N. Dale; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1982
Learning disabled (LD) children were taught sight words with mastery learning strategies, and a comparison group with methods that are typically used in teaching sight words. Results suggest that most LD children can reach mastery on sight words within a reasonable time framework if sound remedial principles are applied consistently. (Author/BW)

Reich, Carol M.; Reich, Peter A. – Journal of Educational Research, 1979
Short, sight-word vocabulary lists derived from the spontaneous speech of four different groups of children are compared with the vocabulary in six beginning reading series. Very high levels of agreement were found for function, but not for content, words. (JMF)

Walsh, Kate – American Educator, 2003
Presents three examples of how basal reading programs miss opportunities to build word and world knowledge: lack of focus on systematically building essential knowledge and vocabulary during teacher read-alouds and discussions aimed at building background knowledge; wasting time by including too many lessons on formal reading comprehension skills;…
