The Driving Force of Problem Behavior
Cipiani, Ennio
Communique, v48 n5 p8, 10 Jan-Feb 2020
The function of any behavior (or chain of behaviors) can only be determined by identifying the prevailing antecedent motivating condition (Cipani & Cipani, 2019). The author dubs this antecedent condition the driving force of behavior. What you desire at a particular point in time, if such desire is at a sufficient level, executes two effects. First, it increases the value of getting a specific something, or in the case of escape functions, it increases the value of terminating something aversive that is currently underway (i.e., specific reinforcers). Second, it makes behaviors that have historically been effective in producing the desired outcome more probable (Cipani & Cipani, 2019; Laraway, Syncerski, Michael, & Poling, 2003; Murphy, Mathis, Weaver, & Dart, 2019). Concurrently, behaviors that are not effective or efficient at producing such a desired outcome become improbable at that moment. He examines these functions with examples and analysis throughout the article.
