George, Robert P.; Levin, Yuval – Education Next, 2015
In this article the authors call attention to the 1965 report, "The Negro Family: The Case for National Action," published by then Assistant Secretary to the Labor Department, Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Fifty years later, these authors suggest that, in retrospect, Moynihan understood that the emerging pattern he noted was troubling above…

McLanahan, Sara; Jencks, Christopher – Education Next, 2015
In his 1965 report on the black family, Daniel Patrick Moynihan highlighted the rising fraction of black children growing up in households headed by unmarried mothers. He attributed the increase largely to the precarious economic position of black men, many of whom were no longer able to play their traditional role as their family's primary…

Gibson-Davis, Christina – Journal of Marriage and Family, 2011
This study analyzed trends in marital behavior for unwed mothers who gave birth between 1960 and 2004. With nationally representative data on 15,353 White and Black unmarried mothers, results indicated that mothers who gave birth after 1989 were waiting much longer to marry than were mothers giving birth before 1968. The most pronounced delays…

Mangold, William D. – Youth and Society, 1979
Two aspects of teenage fertility are examined in this paper: (1) teenage fertility, in general, does not follow the conventional family formation process in which conception follows marriage; and (2) there are considerable differences between White and non-White teenagers in proportions either pregnant outside of marriage or single at delivery.…

Cervera, Neil – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1994
Sixteen white intact families with unwed teenage daughters completed two measures of family adaptability and alliance at six and eight months during the pregnancy and one month after the baby's birth. Most families became more cohesive and had improved family functioning after the pregnancy. (SLD)

Caldwell, Cleopatra Howard; Antonucci, Toni C.; Jackson, James S.; Wolford, Monica L.; Osofsky, Joy D. – Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, 1997
Parental support and conflictive relationships in 48 black and white adolescent mothers (ages 14-19) were examined when their babies were 3 months old. Self-esteem and supportive relationships with fathers were negatively associated with depressive symptomatology among adolescent mothers. Differences in parental relationships and racial…

Jacobsen, R. Brooke; Bigner, Jerry J. – Journal of Black Studies, 1991
A large sample of single mothers was surveyed to compare Black attitudes and White attitudes toward having children. Finds that Black single mothers find a greater degree of satisfaction in parenting than do White single mothers. Suggests that White mothers look elsewhere for life satisfactions. (DM)

Winpisinger, Kim A.; And Others – American Journal of Public Health, 1991
Examines risk factors for childhood homicides using data for Ohio-born children less than eight years of age killed between 1979 and 1986. Among the factors increasing risks were low birthweight, being Black, and having a mother who was teenage, unwed, or not a high school graduate. Other supports in the child's environment may reduce these risks.…

Plotnick, Robert D.; Garfinkel, Irwin; McLanahan, Sara S.; Ku, Inhoe – Journal of Family Issues, 2004
Stricter child support enforcement may reduce unwed childbearing by raising the costs of fatherhood. The authors investigate this hypothesis using a sample of young women from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, to which they add information on state child support enforcement. Models of the probability of a teenage premarital birth and of…

Washington, Anita C. – Journal of Black Psychology, 1982
Compares changes in birth rates, sexual activity, abortion rates, illegitimate births, and incidence of giving babies up for adoption among White and Black adolescents and explores social and cultural influences on the racial differences. Bennett, William J. – American Enterprise, 1995
A look back at the 1965 Moynihan report makes it apparent that the nation has experienced further social decline in the past three decades and that society is becoming inured to the trauma. It is encouraging that public discourse is beginning to acknowledge society's problems and look for solutions. (SLD)

Richards, Leslie N. – Family Relations, 1989
Examined interviews with 43 White single mothers for thematic content relating to economics of single parenthood, feelings about single parenting, the children's fathers, and stigmatization. Results showed that these women had developed coping strategies and were proud of their ability to survive under adverse circumstances, but that they felt…

Parnell, Allan M.; And Others – Social Forces, 1994
Analysis of four national cross-sectional fertility surveys, 1955-84, documents the decreasing likelihood that single women pregnant with their first child will marry to legitimate the birth. Among recent cohorts, decision to marry was influenced by woman's expectations about the timing of marriage and parenthood, living arrangements, academic…

Frenzen, Paul D.; Butler, Margaret A. – Rural Conditions and Trends, 1997
The proportion of births to unmarried women, which has historically been lower in rural than urban areas, has been rising at a faster rate in rural areas since 1980 and by 1994, was higher for rural blacks than urban blacks. In 1994, unmarried teenagers accounted for 11.3% of rural births and 9.6% of urban births. (SV)

Dworkin, Rosalind J.; And Others – Youth and Society, 1993
Examines teenage decision making for resolution of an unplanned pregnancy and the predictors of both the initial plan and the consistency of the adoption plan. Data from 162 pregnant adolescents reveal that the mother's preference strongly predicts the initial plan, and the birthfather's preference affects the consistency of adoption. (GLR)
