Roksa, Josipa – Research in Higher Education, 2010
Growing accountability pressures, accompanied by a lack of readily accessible measures of institutional performance, have led to an increasing focus on graduation rates. Although previous research has illuminated myriad factors influencing students' likelihood of educational success, it has not paid adequate attention to how state contexts may…

Bania, Neil; Stone, Joe A. – Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, 2008
This paper offers unique rankings of the extent to which fiscal structures of U.S. states contribute to economic growth. The rankings are novel in two key respects: They are well grounded in established growth theory, in which the effect of taxes depends both on the level of taxes and on the composition of expenditures; and they are derived from…

Ginsburg, Alan L.; And Others – Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, 1988
In 1984, the Department of Education published the "Wall Chart," the first state-by-state national report card on educational performance. Morrissett, Irving – Social Education, 1986
Presents the results of two surveys, undertaken in 1984 and 1985, which were designed to assess the status of social studies in the United States. Results show a great diversity of practices along with varying degrees of state power and influence over the local curriculum. (JDH)

Wainer, Howard – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1990
It is suggested that some of the technology applied to state Scholastic Aptitude Test scores to measure states' educational performance (particularly use of a truncated Gaussian model) may make it possible to adjust National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores to make inferences about state educational progress possible. (SLD)

Schluter, Gerald; Edmondson, William – Rural Development Perspectives, 1986
Emphasizes agriculture's economic importance and lists the top 10 states according to 4 possible criteria for determining economic dependence on agriculture: number of food and fiber system jobs, number of farmworkers, proportion of food and fiber system jobs, and proportion of farmworkers to total food and fiber system jobs. (JHZ)

Beverly, David P.; Dickman, Janis Y. – Journal of Education for Social Work, 1981
Eight social work schools gave the Virginia State Merit System test for social workers to majors and nonmajors. Significant differences were found in the results among schools but little difference between majors and nonmajors. Questions are raised about the test's validity and schools are urged to review the results. (MSE)

Wolf, Richard M. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 1992
The relevance of state results on tests of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is illustrated with data from the "Digest of Education Statistics--1990" (U.S. Department of Education). Evidence indicates that the contributions of state differences such as economic or demographic differences to NAEP results cannot be…

Linn, Robert L.; And Others – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 1990
Results of a 1987 report--indicating that elementary students of all 50 states were above the national average--were assessed via 2 national mail and telephone surveys. Although results of data for 35 states support the general findings of the 1987 report, it appears that more specific results are less sensational. (TJH)
