Zhang, Zhiyong; Davis, Hasker P.; Salthouse, Timothy A.; Tucker-Drob, Elliot M. – Learning and Individual Differences, 2007
Latent growth models were applied to data on multitrial verbal and spatial learning tasks from two independent studies. Although significant individual differences in both initial level of performance and subsequent learning were found in both tasks, age differences were found only in mean initial level, and not in mean learning. In neither task…

Sonnier, Isodore L.; Kemp, Judy B. – Southern Journal of Educational Research, 1980
Based on the theory that the human left brain hemisphere processes verbal-sequential data and that the right hemisphere processes visual-spatial data, this article presents a teaching strategy for stimulating both hemispheres. It also describes the study that contributed to this strategy. (DS)

Cohen, Ronald L. – Intelligence, 1994
A case is made for the construction of nomothetic theories that can also explain individual differences. The discussion uses examples from the memory area and presents an approach to memory that explains individual findings and individual differences in the context of a single model. (SLD)

Tanenhaus, Michael K.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
A variable time delay naming latency paradigm was used to investigate the processing of noun-verb lexical ambiguities (e.g., "watch") in syntactic contexts that biased either the noun or the verb reading. Results support a two-stage model in which all reading of ambiguous words are initially accessed, followed by suppression of…

Pineno, Oskar; Matute, Helena – Psicologica: International Journal of Methodology and Experimental Psychology, 2005
Retroactive interference between cues trained apart has been regarded as an effect that occurs because the target and interfering associations share a common outcome. Although this view is consistent with evidence in the verbal learning tradition (Underwood, 1966) and, more recently, in predictive learning with humans (Pineno & Matute, 2000),…

Thomas, Glyn – Australian Journal of Outdoor Education, 2007
In this paper I discuss some of the strengths and weaknesses of two different approaches to teaching motor skills to students in outdoor education and outdoor recreation settings. Using acronyms to describe their stages: DEDICT is a six step, direct instructional model that some outdoor leaders may already be familiar with; and FERAL is my…

Akiyama, M. Michael; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
Two experiments investigated the relationship of verification to the answering of yes-no questions. Subjects verified simple statements or answered simple questions. Various proposals concerning the relative difficulty of answering questions and verifying statements were considered, and a model was proposed. (SW)

Gropper, George L. – Educational Technology, 1988
Describes a technology of text display that can help to make learning from text more effective. Topics discussed include the effect of text displays on the ways learners process information; implications of these effects for instructional design; and how text displays join with text content to help with verbal, experiential, and visual processing.…

Lesgold, Alan M.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
Five experiments were conducted that illustrate microprocesses of discourse comprehension related to foregrounding. An intermediate case in which prior memories exist but must be reinstated to active memory was studied in detail. (SW)

Shattuck-Hufnagel, Stefanie; Klatt, Dennis H. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
A phoneme confusion matrix consisting of 1,620 spontaneous speech errors was analyzed. It is shown that there is no tendency for linguistically unmarked consonants to replace marked consonants and that sound segment errors almost always involve the movement of unitary segments and not the movement of component distinctive features. (SW)

Chuah, Y. M. Lisa; Maybery, Murray T. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1999
Used a variance-partitioning procedure to identify age-related and age-invariant components of verbal and spatial memory span in 6- to 12-year olds. Concluded that verbal and spatial short-term memory appear to rely on similar processes when serial recall is required and that development in span is closely tied to increases in processing speed.…

Allen, D. Ian; White, Richard T. – Canadian Journal of Education, 1980
Describing key instructional elements in each of Gagne's five categories of learning objectives, this article outlines numerous teaching strategies drawing illustrations from the social studies area. Also outlined are 10 steps to achieve multiple objectives and reduce problems of matching objectives, learning modes, and teaching strategies. (SB)

Gibbons, Andrew S.; And Others – Educational Technology, 1993
Discusses the development of computer-managed instruction (CMI) and possible changes for the future. Topics addressed include the management function; the current tutorial method that focuses on verbal learning; a closer relationship to performance and practice; resolving conflicting goals in computer-based training; and the psychology of…

Zera, David Aloyzy – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2001
The assessment profiles of 30 school-age children identified with either nonverbal or language-based learning disabilities were examined using a self-organizing systems paradigm. Results suggest that overflow into areas not typically associated with each disability subtype may occur. Concerns regarding ways of determining discrepancy for…

Reder, Lynne M. – Review of Educational Research, 1980
Recent research in the area of prose comprehension is reviewed, including factors that affect amount of recall, representations of text structures, and use of world knowledge to aid comprehension. The need for more information processing models of comprehension is emphasized. Elaboration is considered important for comprehension and retention.…
