Examined verbal learning/memory in 60 male alcoholics. Results indicated that the predicted relative impairment of alcoholics with more difficult material did not occur, nor did the groups' learning curves differ, suggesting that rote associative learning either remains intact or recovers satisfactorily with abstinence. Performed factor analyses of 100 alcoholics' reports of the effects that they experience after alcohol consumption. Five factors emerged: Hangover, Euphoria, Flushing, Seizures, and Sleepiness. These factors may be helpful in assessing theories on the etiology of alcoholism and in studies of ethanol's effects on subsets of alcohol abusers. (BH)

Investigated the relationship of the MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale (MAC) to personality type and level of emotional distress using Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory scores of 38 alcoholic males. Attempted to replicate previous research which demonstrated that psychological test results of newly admitted alcoholics are not stable due to lingering alcohol toxicity.
