Informal Support Resources for Vulnerable Elderly Persons: Can They Be Counted On, Why Do They Work?

Analyzed informal support system resiliency in a survey of 700 elderly. Data indicated the role of the informal network is more important than formal social supports. Children were the most likely network members, and most networks were characterized by active communication. (JAC)

Examined the use of public services by 1,080 Norwegian older adults. Results showed more than one-third use public services for the aged (i.e., are institutionalized or receive home help or home nursing).
