Bhatti, Yosef; Dahlgaard, Jens Olav; Hansen, Jonas H.; Hansen, Kasper M. – American Journal of Evaluation, 2015
Democratic institutions often do not evaluate their instruments. By working closely with authorities, we developed a field experiment to examine an initiative to increase voter turnout among 18-year-olds that had not previously been evaluated. Particular attention was paid to developing an appropriate program theory and to designing the evaluation…

Aarnio, Pauliina; Kulmala, Teija – Field Methods, 2016
Self-interview methods such as audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (ACASI) are used to improve the accuracy of interview data on sensitive topics in large trials. Small field studies on sensitive topics would benefit from methodological alternatives. In a study on male involvement in antenatal HIV testing in a largely illiterate population…

West, Amy R.; Ring, Hannah Reeves – International Education Journal: Comparative Perspectives, 2015
Teachers are a critical resource for children in refugee and emergency settings. Yet few studies have examined what motivates or demotivates teachers, especially in refugee and emergency contexts. In this article we explore the key findings from field research conducted in Algeria and Ethiopia by the American Institutes for Research (AIR) as part…

Koenig, Richard T.; Winger, Marlon; Kitchen, Boyd – Journal of Extension, 2000
Summarizes relatively simple and inexpensive methods for collecting data from agricultural field studies. Describes methods involving on-farm testing, crop yield measurement, quality evaluations, weed control effectiveness, plant nutrient status, and other measures. Contains 29 references illustrating how these methods were used to conduct…

Sturges, Paul; Chimseu, George – Education for Information, 1996
The potential of qualitative approaches to provide an informed critique of quantitative data, or a much richer understanding of motivation and attitudes toward information, was tested in 1994 in two Malawian rural communities. Results confirmed and questioned earlier quantitative studies; argues that the project is a model for practical,…

Poore, J.H., Jr.; And Others – AEDS Journal, 1981
Three Florida high schools used the computer-based PLATO Basic Skills Mathematics program for remedial mathematics lessons. Students showed a median gain of 1.5 grade equivalents and improved attitudes toward mathematics and school. A model of the project's cost effectiveness indicates the need to manage the program carefully. (Author/RW)

Harrow, Brooke S.; And Others – Evaluation Review, 1996
A methodology is presented for collection of cost data in evaluation of community-level health interventions that coincides with the intervention implementation. The seven discrete steps of the analysis are described, and the Minimal Contact Education for Cholesterol Change study is used as an example of how the strategy is used. (SLD)

Haigh, Martin; Gold, John R. – Journal of Geography in Higher Education, 1993
Asserts that traditional field study, widely regarded as an essential part of geographical higher education, is under attack because of high costs and poor administration. Describes a case study of an undergraduate program that combines training in field study with research and presentation skills. (CFR)

Stecher, Brian M.; Klein, Stephen P. – Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, 1997
Estimates of the costs of including hands-on measures of science skills in a large-scale assessment program were derived from a field trial involving more than 2,000 fifth and sixth graders. Results suggest that complexity makes hands-on assessments more than three times as expensive as open-ended writing assessments. (SLD)

Glassner, Barry; Corzine, Jay – Sociology and Social Research, 1982
Develops Glaser and Strauss' (1967) suggestion that fieldwork techniques may be successfully adapted for content analysis research. Discusses relative advantages of literature and traditional fieldwork sites, and initial stages of doing fieldwork at literature sites; demonstrates method used through an evaluation of the hypothesis that prejudice…
