Anderson, Howard N.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Investigated whether high IQ subjects (N=18) could successfully fake good scores on the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI). Results showed that both high and low IQ subjects who were instructed to fake a good score actually scored lower on the average than did their counterparts in the standard administration. (JAC)

Used two subscales of the Jenkins Activity Survey to examine the relationship of self-actualization and self-esteem to Type A behavior in 68 students. Results showed self-actualization and self-esteem were related to only the Involvement subscale. This result is obscured when only total JAS scale scores are used. (JAC)

Investigated the relationship between the practice of Zen meditation and a measure of self-actualization in experienced (N=36) and inexperienced (N=34) meditator groups. Analysis of data showed that a learning period (or selection period) exists for Zen meditation during which there is no increase in group self-actualization. (LLL)

Studied 46 alcoholics one year upon discharge from a residential treatment program based on transactional analysis. Results showed 25 were abstinent and the other 21 were not drinking heavily. Analysis suggested that the abstinent persons had somewhat higher self-esteem and were slightly freer in expression of feelings. (JAC)

Investigated the relationship of sex role as measured by the Bem Sex Role Inventory to measures of self-concept and overt anxiety. Examined the relationship between anxiety and self-actualization in a sample of college students. Items (N=33) from the Personal Orientation Inventory were found to measure anxiety and scored negatively for self-actualization. In this study with 240 introductory psychology students, ten interpretable independent dimensions of satisfaction with life were extracted with six factors that loaded on the PIL and four that loaded on the SONG, supporting Crumbaugh's assertion that the SONG is a complementary scale to the PIL.
