The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, affected the psychological health of individuals of all ages in the U.S. Compared to other age groups, older adults often experience more difficulty in obtaining disaster assistance. Therefore, an outreach team was formed specifically to assist nursing home residents as part of a community effort at a counseling psychology department in a Midwestern university after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. This outreach program to nursing home residents provided several important clinical and research implications in order to serve older adults in future exposures to disaster. These findings include the need for mental health professionals to be aware of both the need for timely support to seniors following a traumatic exposure and the strong need for staff training at nursing homes.
