Counseling across cultures can present many problems for the White American counselor. It is important that the counselor understand the subculture in order to meet the needs of minority clients. In dealing with Black Americans, the counselor must consider issues of racism and religion. When working with Mexican-Americans, the counselor must often deal with language difficulties, a client's macho self-image, and the counselor's own class-bound orientation and feeling of superiority. Shame and order present various implications when counseling Japanese-American Counseling of Chinese-Americans must involve an understanding of family ties. Marriage counseling among the Chinese calls for consideration of many distinguishing characteristics of Chinese culture: moderation, place, family, saving face, and spirits and religion. Case studies of marriage counseling with the Chinese illustrate various problem areas in which cultural attitudes play a major role: (1) interdependence versus individualism; (2) the role of the mother-in-law; (3) attitudes toward sex; (4) infidelity; (5) the practice of adopting out children; and (6) beliefs in spells and folk religion. There are striking differences in how such problems are viewed by Eastern and Western cultures. (NRB)
