Against the background of recent concern for and proposals for the survival and improvement of higher education, it is suggested that each institution must find its own place in the system based on its history, traditions, strengths, weaknesses, creativity, financial viability, leadership, and collaboration. Trends in undergraduate, graduate, and professional enrollment in public and private colleges since 1976 are charted, and the changes in salient student characteristics are discussed, including the increase in the proportion of part-time and female students.
