Broadening the Services of Small High Schools. Bulletin, 1948, No. 9
Gaumnitz, Walter H.; Wright, Grace S.
Office of Education, Federal Security Agency
More than 7 out of 10 public high schools of all types in the United States today are located in rural centers of less than 2,500 population. The problems of providing education for all rural youth through the small high schools in these areas are manifold. Significant progress is being made, but there is much ahead that needs to be done. This bulletin describes how selected high schools are becoming community centers for a wide variety of educational services. Its objective is to contribute further toward rural life progress. This report suggests the ways and means through which some small high schools are broadening their services in their physical outreach, but more particularly in their impacts upon the lives of boys and girls. Following a Foreword and Introduction, the following contents are included: (1) Major factors limiting the services of small high schools; (2) Relating the school's program to the needs of rural youth; (3) Guidance, counseling, and evaluation services; (4) School services to out-of-school youth and adults; (5) Securing and developing community-minded teaching staffs; and (6) Summary. (Contains 10 footnotes.) [Best copy available has been provided.]
