In more than 90 percent of the American colleges the prevailing method of transfer from secondary school to college is by certification, based on the pupil's record in secondary school. In the large majority of cases a record of graduation from an accredited secondary school is required to every student admitted to college. When it is considered that for the year 1931-32 incomplete returns showed a large number (307,076) of freshmen students enrolled in all types of higher institutions, it will be seen how important it is to admission officers in colleges to have at hand a list of accredited secondary schools. This bulletin is intended to meet that need as well as to serve as a source of information for the millions of young people who, whether or not they plan to go on to college, yet wish to do their secondary work in a school of standard grade. An "accredited secondary school," as the term is used in this bulletin with reference to schools accredited by State agencies, generally has, among others, the following characteristics: Its students must earn 15 or 16 units for graduation, it has a school year of 180 or more days, the length of the recitation period is at least 40 minutes, it has a minimum of 3 teachers, and, it provides adequate library and laboratory equipment.
