Anishinaabe (Ojibwe or Chippewa) elder Maude Kegg relates stories of her childhood nearly 90 years ago on the Mille Lacs Reservation in central Minnesota. The Nonremoval Mille Lacs Band of Chippewa to which she belonged accommodated their way of life to altered land and new neighbors, but retained their rich religious and social life. Traditional activities such as building birch bark and reed mat wigwams, boiling maple sap into syrup, and harvesting turtles and wild rice are described. The 41 stories are translated into English with facing pages containing the original Ojibwe in a standardized orthography. The glossary contains Ojibwe word stems from the text, alphabetized according to the inflected citation form for each. The suffixes inflecting many Ojibwe words, often combining into complex endings, are listed twice: in a forward list conventionally alphabetized, and an inverse list containing endings alphabetized from right to left. The full meanings of Ojibwe inflected words are contained in the stem, prefixes, processes such as initial change and reduplication, and inflectional endings. Each entry in the lists has a word class code and information on the grammatical categories represented in the ending, but full analysis of components within stems and endings is not presented. (JAT)
