Italian-American Traditions: Family and Community. An Exhibition in the Museum of the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies.
Balch Inst., Philadelphia, PA.; Italian Folk Arts Federation of America, Philadelphia, PA.
Italian-Americans such as industrialist Lee Iacocca, architect Robert Venturi, film-maker Brian De Palma, and writer Gay Talese have contributed to the emergence of ethnic groups as a major force in the cultural and business life of the United States. What is not widely appreciated, however, is the cultural, religious, craft, and family base which made possible the success of such individuals. By presenting an exhibit on Italian-American life in the Delaware Valley, the Balch Institute hopes to fill this knowledge gap and show how the ancestors of today's Italian-Americans found their "American dream" through hard work, religion, family, and community. This catalog of the exhibit contains selected photographs of the exhibit artifacts, an exposition regarding Italian immigrants to Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey, and an article on the changing role of the Italian-American religious festival.
