In a cultural analysis of school-to-work transition of senior high school women, inadequacies of the allocation and socialization models of status attainment are revealed. The research found that "career" choice is not rational and that "ambitions" and "aspirations" emerge from cultural context. While status may be an important goal for certain groups, it is definitely not a universal striving. (MD)
